Biofiltration:
Trees are part of a natural process known as "biofiltration". In
this process, the leaves and roots of trees act a part of a natural system
which slow runoff and aid in the removal of particulates and pollutants in
ground water. Areas that are devoid of trees and other vegetation have little
or no beneficial effect on water quality. Biofiltration reduces ground water
runoff, reduces stream sediment, and transportation of chemicals into our streams
and oceans.
Oxygen
Exchange:
Trees are part of a natural process that exchanges carbon dioxide for oxygen.
A single tree removes as much as 26 pounds of carbon dioxide and releases 13
pounds of oxygen.
Negative
Ions:
Oxygen Molecules that gain an extra electron are said to be negatively charged
and are referred to as "Negative Ions." There is some indication
that negative ions are beneficial in the removal of pollutants and in mood
elevation. Negative Ions are most common around natural process such as moving
water, and forests.
Stress
Reduction
We all know that time spent around trees and other natural settings have a
great deal to do with relaxation and stress reduction. We seek out those environments
when we want to "unwind". The colors, textures, and light filtration
provided by shade trees have always been valued by those seeking a calmer,
more stress-free environment. Planting trees help to soften the landscape and
add variety and color to our lives.
